Competency approach in teaching is an important tool for improving the quality of education. This approach is aimed at developing students' abilities not only to acquire knowledge, but also to use it, make independent decisions and think critically. The implementation of the competence approach in the teaching of the subject of biology allows students to deeply understand nature and its laws, to form research skills and to develop environmental awareness. This article discusses the methods of using the competency approach in teaching biology, its advantages and results. The subject of biology opens the way for comprehensive development of students and their engagement in scientific research
