Abstract

Enhancing functional literacy in primary school is one of the key priorities of the modern education system. This article explores ways to develop students’ skills in reading, writing, arithmetic, and understanding and analyzing information, as well as applying these skills in real-life situations at the primary education level. Functional literacy aims not only to develop students’ subject knowledge but also their ability to use it effectively in everyday life. The article examines the importance of game-based technologies, working with texts, problem-based tasks, real-life situational questions, and interdisciplinary integration. Additionally, it highlights the effectiveness of using active learning methods that consider the age-specific characteristics of primary school students. The findings of the study demonstrate that developing functional literacy enhances students’ cognitive engagement, enables them to express their ideas freely, and supports the conscious mastery of knowledge.
