The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies raises new questions for the legal system. Among them, the legal status of AI and its possibility of recognition as a legal subject attract special attention. Currently, countries of the world hold different views on this issue. Some lawyers argue for the need to recognize AI as a legal subject, while others believe that it should be considered only as a legal object. This article considers the main theoretical principles related to the legal status of artificial intelligence, analyzes international and national legislation. In addition, the legal aspects of AI related to intellectual property, civil liability and ethical issues are discussed. The possibility of recognizing AI as a legal entity, methods of determining its legal liability and possible ways of future legal regulation are analyzed. We will try to comprehensively consider the legal nature of artificial intelligence based on the views of scholars in the field of law and international experience.
